The corridor
How one patient pathway sets a whole tourism economy in motion, and the case for restoring a direct London–Durban air bridge.
The economic flywheel
One patient pathway, a whole tourism economy
The treatment is the trigger; the destination captures the value.
Patients + companions
Weeks-long premium stays, year-round, at 2 travellers per case.
Flights + hotel nights
Anchor demand for a direct route and for suites — around 18,000 room-nights a year by year three.Source 1: [1]
Local spend
Dining, retail, excursions, safaris and wellness across a multi-week stay.
Tourism, jobs & profile
Durban established as a medical-tourism hub, with the UK as its anchor long-haul market.
Kiros Healthcare brings the patients — partners capture the nights, the seats and the spend.
The air bridge
Proven once, then lost
BA launched the only non-stop Europe–Durban route on 29 Oct 2018 (Boeing 787-8, 3× weekly); suspended during Covid and never reinstated. Every London–Durban trip now requires a stop.Source 2: [2]
The demand is rebuilding. Kiros Healthcare adds reliable, year-round, premium-leaning passengers to help anchor the route’s return — around 1,200 return trips a year by year three, across two cabins per case.Source 1: [1] That's the UK-only base case for year three.
There's a bigger version of this argument: because Durban has no direct long-haul service from the United States or Germany either, a restored London route would also become the connecting hub for patients from those two markets — not just a British route. See the three-market airline case →
Status. British Airways and Virgin Atlantic are target partners. Nothing on this page implies an agreement, a route commitment or an endorsement by any airline.
The route
London Heathrow (LHR) ⇄ Durban King Shaka (DUR)
The passenger profile
Premium-leaning, year-round and counter-seasonal, travelling as pairs
The airport
Modern, wide-body-capable (received the BA 787-8 in 2018); ~15 min from the hospital.
Beyond the UK
By year five, an accelerated case across the UK, US and German markets models 5,020 return LHR–DUR trips — see the airline case.
The destination
A visitor segment KwaZulu-Natal does not currently have
The UK is one of KZN's top international source markets and its largest long-haul market (Mozambique leads total international arrivals as a neighbouring country).Source 3: [3] A recovery visitor stays for weeks rather than nights, travels outside peak season, and books and pays in advance.
| Measure | Year 3 (illustrative) | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Patient journeys | 600 | 12 journeys a month in year one from the committed UK channel, rising to 25 and then 50 a month as the corridor and the additional source markets open |
| Return air trips | 1,200 | Patient plus companion, year-round and counter-seasonal |
| Hotel room-nights | 18,000 | About 49 rooms filled every night of the year |
| Rooms revenue | R54M+ | At an assumed R3,000 average daily rate |

What comes next
The UK is the first corridor, not the only one
Nothing about the model is specific to Britain. It needs a country with high private prices, long elective queues and patients willing to travel — and Durban sits at the end of a workable flight corridor from several. The UK is where Kiros Healthcare starts because the backlog is most acute and the founding team knows the market; the same pathway, the same anchor hospital and the same recovery infrastructure serve any of the markets below.
United States
~72%
typical saving on dental treatment in Durban versus private prices at homeSource 4: [4]
The largest self-pay market in the world, and the widest cost gap of the four.
Germany
~58%
typical saving on dental treatment in Durban versus private prices at homeSource 4: [4]
A large private and top-up insurance market inside the EU, with established medical-travel behaviour.
Australia
~65%
typical saving on dental treatment in Durban versus private prices at homeSource 4: [4]
High private fees, long elective queues, and a shorter, well-served flight corridor into South Africa.
Status: planned, not operating. Kiros Healthcare is building the UK corridor first. The markets above are the intended expansion sequence, and the savings shown are computed from the same dental dataset used elsewhere on this site — they describe the price gap that makes each market viable, not a service on sale there today.
